Astronomical Goals of Ligo

چکیده
The LIGO (Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory) experiment consists of three Fabry-Perot interferometers designed to measure the infinitesimal perfurbations of the curvature of spacetime due to the motion of massive astronomical bodies. The interferometers are sensitive to strains of h ∼ 10 in a frequency range from 40 Hz to 1 kHz. Sources of astronomical interest include binary inspirals of neutron stars or black holes, “burst” sources such as supernovae, periodic signals from pulsars, and stochastic waves (the gravitational equivalent of the cosmic microwave background). In this talk I will discuss these sources in detail, as well as the current status of the interferometers and the plans for future full-time data collection.

Correlated noise in networks of gravitational-wave detectors: Subtraction and mitigation
One of the key science goals of advanced gravitational-wave detectors is to observe a stochastic gravitational-wave background. However, recent work demonstrates that correlated magnetic fields from Schumann resonances can produce correlated strain noise over global distances, potentially limiting the sensitivity of stochastic background searches with advanced detectors. In this paper, we estim...

We discuss the relevance, for the search of gravitational-wave bursts, of upper limits on the total mass loss of the Galaxy which come from various astronomical observations. For sub-millisecond bursts we obtain limits on the event rate, as a function of the GW amplitude, which are stronger than the corresponding upper limits set by LIGO in the S2 run. A detection of a burst rate saturating the...
متن کاملMaraghe Observatory and an Effort towards Retrieval of Architectural Design of Astronomical Units
Maraghe observatory was built by such engineers as Moayiededdin Orozi etc. under supervision of Khaje Nasireddin Tousi in 7th century AH. The most significant feature associated with Maraghe observatory is the fact that architecture is employed to achieve astronomical purposes in this site. The reason for preferring observatory by astronomers was the fact that these units are superior to wooden...
متن کاملQnAs with Steven A. Balbus.
In early 2016, Oxford University astrophysicist Steven Balbus was filling in for a colleague, teaching a course on general relativity. Although not an expert in relativity before the course, Balbus felt growing admiration for Albert Einstein’s century-old theory. In February, during the course, Balbus and others around the world heard news out of the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Obse...
متن کاملStatus of LCGT
LCGT shall be planned to be the first-generation detector with an advanced technique for employing a cryogenic mirror in order to firstly detect a gravitational wave, and after detection, the detector will serve as an astronomical tool to observe the Universe through gravitational wave radiation. In collaborative observation with the LIGO, GEO and Virgo projects, LCGT desires to contribute to t...
